Friday, July 24, 2015 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Several members of the University of Florida tennis teams have been busy on the courts this summer, participating in various tournaments across the country. The tournament this weekend will feel like a home event for the Orange and Blue as Gainesville will play host to the 2015 ITA Summer Circuit.
Five returning letterwinners and two Gator newcomers will be participating in the event this weekend. Elliott Orkin, Josh Wardell, Chase Perez-Blanco, Peggy Porter, and Kourtney Keegan return to the Ring Tennis Complex, along with incoming freshmen McClain Kessler from Calhoun, Ga. and Alfredo Perez from Coral Gables, Fla. Orkin, Perez-Blanco and Keegan are all coming off stellar seasons for the Gators, garnering All-SEC honors.
The ITA Summer Circuit provides college (and junior and alumni) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshmen and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, for NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of nine regional circuits-Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas, Northern California and Southern California-consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, all leading up to the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August.
Another Gator has been making some noise on the ITF Pro Circuit at the USA F22 Futures event in Godfrey, Ill. Junior, Maxx Lipman, advanced to the doubles semifinals along with fellow-SEC player, Gonzales Austin, from Vanderbilt. The duo defeated Aron Hiltzik/Alexander Sendegeya in straight sets, 6-4 6-2, to reach the semifinals. The SEC pair were defeated in the next match by John Lamble / Frederick Saba, 6-3, 6-4.
