BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A single match school-record 14 block assists in UF's season opener and 23 total blocks through the Gators' first two matches equals SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for Florida volleyball sophomore middle blocker Rhamat Alhassan.
Alhassan, who leads the SEC in blocks so far on the young season, shined in front of family and friends in her hometown area while guiding No. 4 Florida to its first two victories of the 2015 season against JMU and American University.
The 2014 SEC Freshman of the Year and the nation's top hitting efficiency leader last season at .458, Alhassan racked up a career best and school record 14 block assists to aid in Florida's 3-0 sweep against James Madison Friday night.
In Sunday's four-set win at American, she hit .417, put down 12 kills and added nine blocks against the Eagles, just one block shy of a double-double.
Alhassan has a seven-block lead (23, 3.29/s) on the next best blocker in the Southeastern Conference statistics through opening weekend (Alyssa Munlyn, Mizzou: 16, 1.45/s), leads the Gators in roofs per set and is also second in hitting efficiency (.333) and points per set (4.43) for the Orange and Blue.
