
Wallace, Gators Thrive at National and World Championships

Former University of Florida swimmer Dan Wallace highlighted an action-packed Friday afternoon for the Orange and Blue after being crowned a World Champion in the men's 4x200-meter relay at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
Wallace, a North Berwick, Scotland, product, swam as a member of Great Britain's relay team and opened with a 1:47.04 split in the finals. The foursome finished with a time of 7:04.33 to edge second-place United States (7:04.75).
Two members from that U.S. team were also former Gators. Ryan Lochte, who swam the opening leg, had the gators in front with a split of 1:45.71. Conor Dwyer took over at the exchange and held onto the lead with the fastest split on the U.S. team (1:45.33) before the quartet turned over the lead to Great Britain on the final stretch.
Former Gators Elizabeth Beisel and Melani Costa-Schmid also took part in Friday's competition. Beisel finished eighth in the 200-meter backstroke prelims (2:09.54) and finished 13th overall in the finals session (2:10.68). Costa-Schmid took part in the 800-meter freestyle and finished 13th-overall with a time of 8:34.89. Senior Jessica Theilmann also competed in the 800-meter freestyle, touching out with a time of 8:36.88 for 15th place. Theilmann and Costa-Schmid will compete in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon.
The UF swim team also had 10 members swimming across four events at the Phillips 66 National Championships in San Antonio on Friday. Sophomore Caeleb Dressel headlined Day Two competition with a top-20 showing in the 200-meter freestyle prelims. The Green Cove Springs, Florida, native posted a time of 1:50.22 to finish 20th among the field. Dressel capped the night later on in the finals, finishing fifth in the 'C' final with a time of 1:51.26.
