No. 3 Gators to Begin 2016 Season with USF on Wednesday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 3 University of Florida women's tennis team kicks off their 2016 dual match season against the University of South Florida Bulls on Wednesday, January 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
Gators Head Coach Roland Thornqvist enters his 15th year at the helm of the Gator women's tennis team. Coach Thornqvist along with Associate Head Coach Dave Balogh have been running the show at the Ring Tennis Complex for 15 seasons.
The Orange and Blue come into the season ranked No. 3 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Additionally, UF has seven singles players and four doubles tandems in the ITA preseason rankings. After a stellar fall circuit, junior Belinda Woolcock is currently ranked third in the nation in singles followed closely by sophomore Brooke Austin sitting at No. 11. Junior Kourtney Keegan reached No. 25, Brianna Morgan is at No. 51, Josie Kuhlman sits at No. 56, Spencer Liang is ranked No. 73 and newcomer Anna Danilina rounds out the Gator rankings at No. 110. UF is one of only four programs that has two singles players in the Top-15.
Doubles action has looked superior for the Gators in the fall months leading up to the season. Four doubles pairings have cracked the Top-50, including two in the Top-15. Austin and Keegan begin 2016 at No. 5 and the duo of Kuhlman and Woolcock sit at No. 15. The Gators are the only program in the nation with two doubles teams in the Top-15. Kuhlman and Morgan are currently at No.33 and Danilina and Morgan are ranked No. 50.
Series History Against USF
The Orange and Blue hold the all-time series lead over the South Florida Bulls, 52-1 with their last win coming during the 2015 season when UF swept USF, 7-0 on Jan. 28.
2015 Recap
The Gators made it an exciting season in 2015 with another SEC Regular Season Championship, a solid 24-4 record and making a run into the NCAA team quarterfinals. The Orange and Blue dropped a close contest to eventual NCAA Champions, the Vanderbilt Commodores, 4-3. UF finished the year ranked No. 6 in the final ITA Team Rankings.
Familiar Faces from 2015
Florida returns seven players from the 2015 roster, including three All-Americans, Brooke Austin, Kourtney Keegan and Josie Kuhlman. Sophomore Peggy Porter, juniors Spencer Liang and Belinda Woolcock and lone-senior Brianna Morgan are all back in the orange and blue this season.
New Year, New Gator
UF welcomed one newcomer to the 2016 squad. Russia native Anna Danilina arrived at Florida in August to compete for the Gators. Danilina brings a lofty resume and a wealth of experience from her playing time on the ITF junior and professional circuits. The Gator sophomore has played in all four of the junior grand slams, reaching the quarterfinals or better in each.
The Streak
Ring Tennis Complex has seen quite a few wins during its time as home to the Gator women's tennis team. In fact, it has seen 481 Gator victories, including a current 147 dual match win streak. The streak is the longest active win streak at the Division I level.
Season Opening Success
The Gators have seen a great deal of success in season-opening matches in the last 30 years. The last time UF dropped a season openers was on Feb. 1, 1985 at Miami. The Gators are 40-3 all time in season-opening dual matches.
