TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Johannes Ingildsen and sophomore Alfredo Perez took the doubles title at the ITA Regional Championship on Monday. The pair defeated South Florida's Roberts and Bertran in a rigorous split-set match that ended in a 10-point tiebreaker.
UF took the first set 7-6 (2), but USF fought back to take set two from the Gators. The winner was determined in a tiebreak set that proved just has close this final match up was, ending 10-8 in UF's favor.
This win was the icing on the cake for the pair after a challenging run in the doubles competition. Ingildsen/Perez pulled off two upset wins in the tournament – against No. 1 Findel-Hawkins/Muscheites (UNF) in the semifinals and No. 3 Lomacki/Andrews (UM) in the quarterfinals – to advance to the finals. This was the first competition Ingildsen and Perez competed in as a team, one of many new pairings the team is testing this season.
Ingildsen also made an impressive run in the singles consolation tournament, advancing to the semifinals before falling to No. 9 Cole Fiegel of Georgia Tech.
Quoting Assistant Coach Tanner Stump:
"We are so proud of what Alfredo and Johannes accomplished these last few days. To come in with very little experience together and get the job done against our extremely tough regional field is a huge compliment to their chemistry and work together. They are learning to compete and communicate very well with each other and we hope this is just the tip of the iceberg for them.
"The weekend as a whole was good for us as coaches to see. There are some things that we saw happen repeatedly that we have to correct and begin to move forward with for us to accomplish what we want to accomplish this year. We know that our guys are dedicated to this program and the brand that UF has, we just have to commit to getting after it every day and seek the perfection we want as individuals and as a team."
What's Next for the Gators:
The team will head to Birmingham, Alabama for the Birmingham Future; the Qualifying rounds begin on Friday, Oct. 28.
