Sophomores Sweep Singles to Help No. 3 Florida Defeat No. 29 Baylor

The No. 3 Florida Gators defeated the No. 29 Baylor Bears, 4-0 on Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team improved to 4-0 in the 2016 season with a 4-0 match sweep of the No. 29 Baylor Bears on Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex.

UF grabbed the doubles point quickly on Saturday with sweeps on courts one and three in under a half hour. No. 22-ranked Anna Danilina and Brianna Morgan were the first off the doubles court with a 6-0 victory over Kiah Generette and Gabriela Ferriera. The No. 16-ranked duo of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan defeated Blair Shankle and Theresa Van Zyl, 6-0 on court one to clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, the Orange and Blue only allowed the Baylor Bears to win seven games in three matches. Sophomore Josie Kuhlman swept Rhianna Newborn in the first set and then only dropped one game in the second set to take the match, 6-0, 6-1. Fellow-sophomore Brooke Austin completed her match against Kiah Generette two minutes later for a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Danilina would get her first match-clinching victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gabriela Ferriera to take the match for the Gators.

Up next, No. 3 Florida takes on the No. 20 Clemson Tigers on Sunday at the Ring Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Roland Thornqvist's Thoughts
On the win over Baylor...
"I thought we were really, really good in doubles, so now I finally get to shave. We were really sharp from the start. We made the majority of first serves. We made almost all of our returns so subsequently we were to win the first or second point in every doubles game. We were playing up 30-love, instead of down 15-love or down 30-love like we were last weekend. We didn't have to dig ourselves out of a hole too much and we were playing downhill from the start."

On strong singles play today...
"I think we are really sharp. We really like to dictate and it was interesting to see on a couple of courts, we had to figure a couple of things out. Spencer is not used to dictating as much. She is more of a defending player. Today, she had to bring her offense out. In the on one, two and three, I thought we were super sharp."

Sophomore Josie Kuhlman
On a strong showing in singles today...
"I think all of us just came out strong. I know we were playing clinch-clinch, but I always like to think that I am going to finish the match. So, I just went out there and played my game and it was nice."
