Sunday, February 14, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 3-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team grabbed their second sweep of the weekend over the No. 20-ranked Clemson University Tigers on Sunday at the Ring Tennis Complex. The two match wins this weekend pushed Florida's home winning streak to 151 straight dual matches.
The Tigers tested the Gators early on in doubles play on Sunday. No. 14-ranked Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock defeated Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Tristen Dewar, 6-2. Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan clinched the doubles point for the Orange and Blue. The Gator tandem was down 3-5 to Fernanda Navarro and Ayen Broomfield, but came back to win four-straight games and the match, 7-5.
Singles action saw the Gators sweep play on all six courts. No. 73-ranked Anna Danilina was once again the first Gator off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Daniela Ruiz. Senior Brianna Morgan was next to complete her match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ally Miller-Krasilnikov. No. 19 Austin defeated No. 11 Joana Eidukonyte, 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Gators.
The final three singles matches saw Kuhlman and Woolcock get their respective match wins. On Court 4, Keegan took the first set, 6-2. Clemson's No. 75-ranked Fernanda Navarro went up 2-4 in the second set. The Gator junior would force a tie at 6-all. A 7-1 tie break win gave the Gator the win and the Orange and Blue the sweep of the Tigers.
Up next, the Gators will take on the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, the California Bears, on Friday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. on the west coast.
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist's Thoughts
On the tough test in doubles Clemson provided for the Gators…
"We knew Clemson was going to be really good in doubles. We had a hard time with them last time we played them at the Indoors. They are very aggressive and have a lot of energy. Even though, we had a healthy lead on three, they fight so hard and it came down to a couple point here and there, and you look up and we are at five-all. I thought our one team did a great job of keeping their composure, coming from behind. They really cleaned up their game being down 5-3 to win four-straight games, so that really helped.
I told our three team that this is why we play three doubles. We have three really good doubles pairings anytime we go out there, we don't just rely on one team the whole time. And I think that is a great relief for our players."
On Kourtney Keegan getting the match win on Court 4…
"She hits the ball huge. She a clean first set. There was nothing you could say about the first set. Then she had a little lapse of concentration for about 5-10 minutes in the beginning of the second set and it almost cost. Then again, at the end of the match, she was clean again. She had fewer unforced errors and came in on the right ball. Obviously, she served really well. She has got a cannon."
On the Gators keeping their foot on the pedal to sweep Clemson, 7-0…
"Yesterday, we clinched at four points and sometimes you end up scoreboard watching. I think this team really loves to play it out. They are methodical in their preparation. They really like to play. Today, I knew some of them took their time but they are very focused when they play. Belinda today was spotty, maybe with some unforced errors in there, but really tough and gritty at the end. I like the energy from all eight. It is like a great web. They all get along really well and work hard together. They seem to have an awful lot of fun whenever they play and it makes it easier to bring out the genius. It's easier to play great tennis when you are happy and everyone is supporting one another. Right now, I think we are about as good as we can be, really."
