Anders Eriksson is just the third SEC underclassman hammer thrower since 2002 to eclipse 70.45 meters
LOS ANGELES – The University of Florida track and field program opened the Power Conference Cardinal & Gold Challenge on Friday (March 25) afternoon with impressive performances from two of its hammer throwers.
For a second consecutive week, freshman Anders Eriksson made a serious run at the school record. The Swede topped the eight-man field with a mark of 70.46 meters, leaving him just 27 centimeters off Jeremy Postin's school record. Eriksson's improvement also allowed him to maintain his No. 2 national ranking.
Moreover, Eriksson is just the fifth Division I hammer thrower since 2002 to throw farther than 70.45 meters as a freshman. Among SEC throwers, he is the eighth man to eclipse that mark since 2002, and one of only three underclassmen (Walter Henning, LSU, 2009; Elias Hakansson, Alabama, 2014) to record such a throw during that timeframe.
In her first throw of the season, redshirt senior Jayla Bostic moved up to No. 7 on Florida's all-time outdoor top 10 with a winning throw of 61.06 meters, nearly two meters better than her previous personal record. Bostic's mark ranks fifth in the East Region this season.
Sophomore Lloydricia Cameron took third in the discus throw, posting a top mark of 51.64 meters. The Miami, Fla. native is now the No. 8-ranked discus thrower in the East Region.
Late Friday night at the Raleigh Relays, redshirt senior Eddie Garcia notched a top-20 finish in the men's 10,000 meters race, crossing in 29:41.09. Fellow redshirt senior Jimmy Clark took 21st place with a time of 29:49.06.
Florida continues action at the Cardinal & Gold Challenge at 5:30 p.m. ET this evening. Live television coverage will be provided by Pac-12 Los Angeles from 6:30 p.m. ET through the meet's conclusion.
