Eriksson broke UF's hammer throw record, while Jefferson made collegiate history and joined a world-class group of sprinters
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- University of Florida thrower Anders Eriksson was named the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Week, while sprinter Kyra Jefferson was named the SEC Women's Runner of the Week, the league office announced in a release Tuesday (April 26) afternoon.
In addition to breaking the hammer throw school record at the Virginia Challenge, Eriksson's mark of 71.14 meters, 16 inches farther than Jeremy Postin's old record, is the third-longest by an NCAA Division I freshman since at least 2002. The Swede is also just the eighth SEC thrower to eclipse 71 meters prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships during that span. Of those eight, Eriksson is one of three underclassmen to accomplish the feat.
Jefferson made collegiate history en route to collecting her weekly honor.
The Detroit native logged a wind-legal time of 11.17 seconds, matching the No. 4-ranked time in Division I this year, at last Friday's (April 22) Tom Jones Memorial Invitational. This made Jefferson the first woman to break 11.20 seconds in the 100 meters, 22.25 seconds in the 200 meters, and 51.51 seconds in the 400 meters as a collegian.
Moreover, according to athlete profiles maintained by the International Association of Athletics Federation, Jefferson joins four-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix (United States), 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kim Gevaert (Belgium), four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross (United States), and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Sherone Simpson (Jamaica) as the only sprinters in the world to accomplish that feat since 2002.
Eriksson, Jefferson, and the Gators will continue their outdoor campaign Thursday (April 28) through Saturday (April 30) at Penn Relays and Saturday at the LSU Invitational.
