This Saturday's meet at LSU could serve as a mini-preview for the SEC Championships.
Gators Engaging with Elite Competition at LSU Invitational on Saturday
Friday, April 29, 2016 | Track and Field
A combined 11 top-15 men's and women's teams will be in Baton Rouge, La. this weekend
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Florida track and field program will venture to Saturday's (April 30) LSU Invitational, which will feature five top-10 teams on the men's side and six top-15 women's programs, for its final tune-up meet leading into championship season.
For the Gators, who remained at No. 2 in the men's rankings and leaped four spots and nabbed the no. 5 ranking on the women's side, nine of their entries for the LSU Invitational currently rank 20th or higher nationally in their respective events.
Some of the marquee events this weekend will be redshirt junior Kyra Jefferson's first 200 meters run of the outdoor season, a second running of the 4x100-meter relay for the grouping of Robin Reynolds, Shayla Sanders, Skylar Ross-Ransom, and Jefferson, who combined to post the second-fastest time in the country this year earlier this month, and Anders Eriksson's first hammer throw competition since breaking the school record at the Virginia Challenge last weekend.
After this Saturday's meet, Florida will have roughly two weeks before SEC Championships get underway on May 12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Florida track and field head coach Mike Holloway on the group traveling to the LSU Invitational…
"Kyra (Jefferson) is going to run her first 200 (meters); we're excited about that. We'll run the (women's) 4x100 relay again and get that group going. I just want to see a little fire out of that group. We've done a good job thus far outdoors of staying focused and competing hard.
"With the level of competition there … it's maybe the best meet in the country before the SEC (Championships). It's just very important we go in there and be focused and engage in the competition. I talk all the time about matching the intensity of the teams at the facility, and that's important this weekend, because it's going to be a mini-preview, in a lot of events, to the conference championships."
On whether or not the biggest thing he wants out of this weekend is to start to see the passion and intensity expected of UF teams…
"Absolutely. To me, an issue sometimes is that young athletes think they can just turn it on and off. You can't. You have to have an even-keeled approach to it, but you can't just totally shut down and figure that you'll wake up one morning and be intense and serious. Anytime we go into a competition where there's great competition, we need to step up to that level. That's what we have to do this weekend."
