EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Florida women's golf team completed the second round of the NCAA Championship Saturday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. Florida improved on its score from Friday, carding a +5 (293). With an overall score of +14 (590), UF is tied for 17th place and is only three strokes behind the cut line at 15th place.
Junior Kelly Grassel played very well for the Gators, firing a bogey-free second round on her way to an E (72) finish. Grassel is currently tied for 38th at +2 (146). She leads the 132-player field with 32 made pars throughout the first two rounds.
Junior Karolina Vlckova and freshman Sam Wagner both improved on their first round performance by each carding a +1 (73). Their 21-spot climb up the leaderboard was the largest climb of the day for the Gators.
Through two rounds, the University of Southern California leads the field by five strokes with a score of -7 (569). The individual leader of the tournament is Dewi Weber from Miami, who carded a -9 (69-66-135).
Florida will need to finish the third round in the top 15 to advance to the fourth round on Monday. The top nine individuals that are not on an advancing team also move on to play Monday for the individual national championship. If the Gators do not qualify as a top 15 team, both Grassel and sophomore Taylor Tomlinson are currently in the top nine individuals not on an advancing team.
Head Coach Emily Glaser on second round play:
"We had a shaky start and struggled to get any real momentum going. We are doing a lot of things well but just haven't had any significant putts fall, and that's holding us back a little. We know it's there. Tomorrow we will play tough and do our best to make a move up the leaderboard."
