Gators Earn 10 More Eugene Berths on Day Two of NCAA Championships East Preliminary
Friday, May 27, 2016 | Track and Field
UF has 13 opportunities left to clinch additional spots for the NCAA Championships in Eugene
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida track and field program punched 10 more tickets to Eugene, Ore. with another day of outstanding performances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships East Preliminary. The Gators also advanced four of six runners to finals scheduled for the third and final day of the regional prelims.
UF will send a total of four 400 meters runners to the Beaver State, with three coming from the men's side. Kunle Fasasi, Najee Glass, and Arman Hall are the third trio of UF quarter-milers to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the last four years. For the women, Robin Reynolds ran the fifth-fastest overall time to advance.
In the 100 meters, Shayla Sanders secured her third consecutive NCAA Outdoors berth in the event, while Ryan Clark became the first UF freshman since Terrell Wilks (2008) to qualify.
Three more qualifiers came from the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles. Eric Futch (49.38) and TJ Holmes (49.72) both broke 50 seconds to nab spots in Eugene for the men. It's also the first time since 2004 the Gators will send two 400 hurdlers to the NCAA Championships.
Claudia Francis booked her ticket by becoming the first sub-56-second 400 hurdler in program history. Francis crossed in 55.55, topping Ugonna Ndu's previous school record of 56.12 seconds.
One of the day's most surprising performances came from sophomore discus thrower Jontavia Dykes, who entered the meet seeded 31st but broke her personal record by over four meters, good enough for a sixth-place finish and a spot at the national meet. Dykes is the first UF women's discus thrower to qualify since Rachel Longfors (2006), and the first Gator underclassman to do so since Longfors' sophomore season in 2003.
Saturday's (May 28) competition will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET. Ticketing and spectator information can be found at the links provided below.

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head Coach Mike Holloway on the UF's 10 NCAA Championships qualifiers from day two…
"As a follow up to last night, I think everybody came out and did a great job tonight. We had a couple of spots where things didn't go as we'd have liked them to. Very, very proud of Jontavia Dykes—about a 13-foot PR for her today. Thought the hurdlers came out today and got us off to a good start in the short hurdles. The men's and women's 400s went well. Really proud of Claudia Francis breaking the school record; she's been looking for that for about a month now, and I challenged her to do some things today and she got them done. Also very proud of the men's 400 hurdlers—personal best for TJ Holmes and the second-fastest time of Eric Futch's life. We had a good day."
On the developments of Claudia Francis and Jontavia Dykes…
"The biggest thing for both of those ladies is they're trusting the process now. They're both young women who've struggled a little bit with self-confidence, but just through constant practice, belief, and trust in the program, they've both started to realize the potential they both have. For Claudia, who's been running the 400 hurdles for less than two months now, it's a really phenomenal job to come out here and break the school record."
On the four quarter-milers headed to Eugene…
"We were a little tentative today, on both sides. But we (said) the job was to qualify. They did a great job with that. Very proud of them all. We've just got to get back to Gainesville and get re-focused, re-tool, and get ready, because that's going to be a tough event at the national meet. Extremely proud of the work they've done this year. That was the goal earlier in the year: to get three or four (men) there. We were hoping to get a second female, but it didn't work out for Sharrika (Barnett) today."
On tomorrow's closing day of competition…
"Very excited about tomorrow. The message to the team will be: we've still got work to do. We've had a phenomenal meet to this point, but it's not over yet."
