Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Lochte, incoming Gator Maxime Rooney and Conor Dwyer all finished inside the top 16 in the field, advancing to the event's semifinals tonight. Dressel, posting the third-fastest overall time at 48.69; winning his heat; and improving his qualifying time by .05, was assigned to the second semifinal, while Rooney and Dwyer will compete in the first.
Rooney was the third-fastest Gator and seventh overall at 49.14, and Dwyer placed 15th at 49.51.
Lochte, who beat out Rooney for sixth place by .01 seconds, has opted to scratch the semifinal.
Brad deBorde was also scheduled to appear in the event but was a no-show at preliminaries.
The day's second event, women's 200m butterfly, featured three Gators. Taylor Katz improved on her initial 30 seed, coming in 20th place at 2:12.92. Alyssa Yambor-Maul, making her 2016 trials debut, swam a 2:14.75. She blew her 80 seed out of the water, placing 33rd. Sierra Kuhn, also appearing for the first time at the trials, began the heat but was disqualified.
Ross Palazzo and incoming Gator Chandler Bray rounded out the morning in the men's 200m breaststroke. Bray finished 23rd at 2:16.11, while Palazzo tied for 42nd at 2:18.21.
Each day of trials will begin with preliminary heats at 11 a.m. EST and conclude with event finals and semifinals at 7:45 p.m. EST. Estimated start times for each preliminary event can be found here, and the event schedule for the entire meet can be found on the USA Swimming website.
Prelims will be broadcast live daily on the NBC Sports app and online and on edited tape-delay on the NBC Sports Network. Event semifinals and finals will air live on NBC and online. The full TV schedule is available here.
