Three current Gators will play in the Pan Am Cup in Santo Domingo July 2-10.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida rising junior Rhamat Alhassan is one of three current Gators competing in the Pan Am Cup in the Dominican Republic next week. Alhassan and Alex Holston will represent Team USA, while Gator Shainah Joseph is playing for Team Canada in the event.
Gator fans can keep up with the trio via Alhassan's blog.
"Making this roster and having the opportunity to represent my country in the Pan Am Cup means a lot to me," Alhassan said. "It is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to my volleyball goals. What makes it even better is the people that I get to share this great experience with; and we can't forget about Shaïnah also playing for Team Canada. We have talked over the summer and are so excited to play each other and have a good time in the Dominican Republic."
Alhassan and the U.S. Women's National Team departed training camp in Anaheim, Calif., early Thursday morning for the Dominican Republic. Her blog entry from today:
It's travel day!! Today started off today with a 4:15 a.m. wake-up call. We loaded the bus and hit the road by 5 a.m.
Alex and I both made the team, so there really will be three Gators representing their countries at the Pan Am Cup! Looking back at the week training has been great! The last three days of practice have shown a lot of improvement and we are all getting a lot more comfortable with each other. On Wednesday we actually got to practice next to the National Team. It may not sound like anything crazy, but being next to them and watching how they work is a great inspiration. It's a reminder that in the future I could be in their position training for the Olympics.
We also had a good amount of down time and decided to go to Newport Beach. The weather was great, but the water on the other hand was freezing! The east coast definitely wins when it comes to warmer water. We're boarding our flight to Miami right now. I'll be posting while we're in the Dominican Republic so check back for updates!
The US squad is part of the six-team Pool B with Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago, while Joseph and Team Canada are in Pool A with Colombia, host Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Play starts Sunday for both teams. Canada will play Colombia at 2 p.m., followed by USA and Peru at 4 p.m. ET.
