Track & Field
- Christian Taylor (USA) became the fifth man in history to defend his Olympic triple jump gold medal. The only others to do it are Myer Prinstein (USA, 1900 & 1904), Adhemar da Silva (Brazil, 1952 & 1956), Jozef Szmidt (Poland, 1960 & 1964), and Viktor Saneyev (USSR, 1968, 1972, 1976).
- Will Claye (USA) became the fifth American in Olympic history to win multiple medals in the triple jump. Claye also took silver at the 2012 Olympics.
- Genevieve LaCaze (Australia) finished seventh in her heat and ran a personal best to qualify on time for the 5,000 meters final, which is scheduled for Friday (Aug. 19) at 8:40 pm. ET. It is scheduled to air live on NBC.
- Kerron Clement (USA) posted a season-best time as well as the top overall semifinal time (48.26) to advance to Thursday morning's final. Clement led nearly the entire race and shut his run down with roughly 30 meters to go.
- Shara Proctor (Great Britain), making her second Olympics appearance, fell short of qualifying for the long jump final. Proctor's top mark of 6.36 meters put her in 21st place, and only the top 12 advanced.
Volleyball
- Kelly Murphy and Team USA used a sweep of Japan (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) Tuesday afternoon to advance to the Olympic Games semifinals.
- Murphy started the match and put up five points for the Americans with four kills and one block.
- Team USA will face either Russia or Serbia Thursday to advance to the Medal Round. With a win against Thursday's opponent, USA would play for a Gold Medal, with a loss the Americans would play for Bronze.
Historic Wednesday
- The only Gator in Olympic action on Wed., Aug. 17 is Sandra Gal (Germany), who will be the first letterwinner competing in golf, a sport which is making a return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 112 years.
