BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida's women were picked to finish fourth, while its men were chosen to finish tied for fifth in the 2016 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Coaches Preseason Poll, which was unveiled Monday (Aug. 29) afternoon.
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's preseason regional rankings were also released Monday, and the Gators checked in at eighth on the women's side and fifth on the men's side of the South Region.
UF's women finished seventh at the SEC Championship last season, but the Gators return five runners who competed at both the conference and NCAA South Regional Championship meets.
The strong contingent of returners is headlined by 2014 USTFCCCA All-South Region honoree Taylor Tubbs, who missed out on her second consecutive all-region accolade by one spot last season, and sophomore Elisabeth Bergh, the 21st-place finisher at the SEC Championship.
Newcomers Hannah Brookover, the 2015 FHSAA Class 1A Cross Country State Championship winner, and Jessica Pascoe, the 2016 Australian Junior Cross Country Championships winner, figure to make an immediate impact as well.
The Gators were also seventh on the men's side at last year's SEC Championship. Following the departures of individual NCAA Championship qualifiers Eddie Garcia and Jimmy Clark, UF will turn to 2015 USTFCCCA All-South Region honoree Carlos Miranda and SEC All-Freshman Team member Jack Guyton to lead the way.
