Saturday, September 10, 2016 | Men's Golf
DALTON, Ga. – The University of Florida men's golf team saw three players shoot even-par or better Saturday in the second round of the Carpet Capital Classic in Dalton, Ga. The Gators totaled 285 strokes, besting last season's second round by 14 shots. The overall score of (-7) 569 placed the team in fifth at the end of day two.
Sophomore Gordon Neale had a solid day on the course, carding his second eagle in as many days along with three birdies on his way to a (-4) 68. The score pushed Neale into the top-15 (T12).
Junior Ryan Orr also played well, bouncing back from +4 (76) first round with a -1 (71), including an eagle. Sophomore Sam Horsfield followed up his first round 65 with an even par 72 to stay in the top-five (T4).
After the second round, the University of Virginia kept hold of the lead, shooting (-11) 277, sitting at (-23) 553. They lead the pack by three strokes with Auburn having sole possession of second at (-20) 556. Auburn's Ryan Benton and Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans are tied for the individual lead at nine-under.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon on second round play:
"Gordon (Neale) really led us out there. He's a fantastic player and a wonderful kid and his ability is really starting to show through. I'm proud of what he was able to do today and he's put himself in a great position for tomorrow. Gordon is a phenomenal golfer and we're going to rely heavily on him going forward. Ryan (Orr) came back with a nice round, Alejandro (Tosti) had two birdies to finish, and Sam (Horsfield) hung really tough on a day where he didn't have his best stuff. All in all, we hung in there on a day that wasn't the best and we've got a chance to move up the leaderboard tomorrow. Final rounds are never easy, but the toughest teams usually come out with the best score and I want our team to be the toughest team tomorrow."
