Florida notched wins over Central Michigan and Morgan State to improve to 3-1 in 2016.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Fresh faces, freshmen, Carli Snyder and a number of career bests highlighted No. 7 Florida's second of two matches Saturday at Jenison Field House on the Michigan State campus as the Gators swept Morgan State (25-11, 25-12, 25-9) to cap off the day's action.
Snyder slammed down a team-best 14 kills, her fourth straight match in double digits, to post a .609 hitting efficiency against the Bears. Senior Alex Holston (.545) and freshmen Morgyn Greer (.571), Darrielle King (.417) and Rachael Kramer (1.000 on five swings) all hit above .400 on the afternoon to contribute to UF's .556 clip, the third best in a single match in school history. Florida had just four attack errors, its fewest in three years since four against Duke in 2013.
Kramer, junior Sam Dubiel and freshman Cheyenne Huskey all earned their first starts this season against Morgan State, while the Gators had significant contributions and career matches from Allie Gregory, Chanelle Hargreaves, Ann-Lorrayne Bzoch and Lindsey Rogers as the quartet had five of Florida's seven service aces – three back-to-back-to-back from Rogers – and nearly half (14) of UF's 35 digs.
Serving runs proved to keep the Gators poised for their second sweep of the day, first a seven-point strand for Rogers in the first, including her trio of aces, to keep UF in control. Dubiel earned the start at libero in the second set, while Huskey, who dished out a career best 35 assists, served Florida to a 5-0 lead in the second frame. Bzoch capitalized with a four-point run of her own for the 19-9 Gators lead in the second.
Hargreaves, who dropped over three aces in Florida's first match against Central Michigan, had her fourth ace on the day with a mini service run to start the third frame, while Gregory rallied for a nine-point run through the heart of the third for the 17-4 UF lead that would seal the deal against the Bears.
The Gators return to Jenison Field House at 3:30 p.m. Sunday for their Auto-Owners Spartan Invitational finale against the host team Michigan State Spartans, who are receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Sunday's Gators-Spartans showdown is scheduled to stream on BTN+ or via the BTN2Go app.
WORDS FROM WISE
"This was a great opportunity to let what we hope will be our strength, to be our strength: the depth. To play all four middle blockers, to get so many of our back-row players in. The constant really continues to be Carli Snyder. She is playing at such a high level and continued right where she left off last weekend."
THE RECORDS
No. 7 Florida: 3-1
Morgan State: 0-6
