Redshirt senior one of 78 punters named to list
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt senior Johnny Townsend was named as a candidate for the 2017 Ray Guy Award, as the Augusta Sport Council announced on Tuesday.
The Ray Guy award is presented to the nation's top collegiate punter at The Home Deport College Football Awards at the end of the season. The candidate list sits at 78 collegiate punters.
The Orlando, Fla. native currently leads the nation and the SEC at 49.54 yards per punt and has already recorded 2,031 yards on 41 punts this season. He has booted 20 punts of over 50 yards and has registered 15 punts inside of the 20-yard line.
Against Texas A&M, he recorded a career-long 67 yard punt, which was the longest punt by a Gator since Kyle Christy's 66-yarder in 2012.
Townsend's punting average of 49.54 would set the all-time program record, surpassing his own mark of 47.9 yards per punt, set last season.
After his 381 yard performance against Georgia, the redshirt senior became UF's all-time leader in punting yardage, passing Eric Wilbur (9,900) who held the record since 2006. Townsend currently sits at 10,078 yards.
The candidate list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists to be announced on November 16. Townsend has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists each of the last two seasons.
Following that announcement, a national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision SIDs, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for three finalists who will be identified on November 21.
The winner will be announced live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Award on December 7.
