Gators Build Momentum At Florida State Invitational

The Florida men relied on running together in a pack for their second 8k race of the season and the strategy paid dividends as seven Gators turned in personal best times.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jessica Pascoe and Lauren Perry turned in a pair of top-10 performances, while seven Florida men notched personal best times early Friday morning to lead the Gators at the Florida State Invitational.

The men tied for second in the 8k with 62 points and the women captured third on 71 points in the 5k race.

Pascoe led the Florida women with her third consecutive, fifth career, top-10 finish thanks to her fourth place time of 18:01.6. Only a few seconds behind Pascoe, Perry (18:05.6) placed seventh to pick up her second straight and the fourth overall top-10 finish for her career.

The Florida men relied on running together in a pack for their second 8k race of the season and the strategy paid dividends as seven Gators turned in personal best times.

Jack Rogers led the pack with his 8th place time of 25:08.3, which was nearly two minutes faster than his previous personal best of 27:03.00 that was set at the Mountain Dew Invitational just two weeks ago.

Alongside Rogers, Jonathan Hulzebos (13th), Marshall Dillon (14th), Dominic Williams (16th), Jesse Millson (17th), Zach Purvis (29th) and Bryce Statham (21st) each turned in personal best times.

The Gators return to training in preparation for the SEC Cross Country Championships (Oct. 27) in Athens, Ga.

Assistant Coach Chris Solinsky

Overall thoughts on today's race…
"Today we continued to build momentum on both sides heading into the SEC Championships. Everyone sees the fitness rounding into form and the team believes in what we are doing. Now, it comes down to executing within the race and that comes with gaining more experience."

On the men's performance…
"The men had a much better showing this week compared to the Mountain Dew, which leaves them hungry for three weeks of training heading into the SEC Championships. Jack Rogers really had a great breakthrough today. He stuck himself in the lead pack and battled which led to knocking over ninety seconds off his personal best."

On the women's performance…
"The women competed with a small squad today and still executed pretty well. They learned a lot about race tactics, which will help heading into SEC's. (Jessica) Pascoe and (Lauren) Perry did a great job today, but still made a few tactical mistakes. We will work through those and if we can execute it'll lead to big breakthroughs. Morgan (Hull) and Laura (Jones) battled really well coming back from a little time off and I'm excited to have them back out there with us."
