Florida's men are the reigning outdoor national champions and open the season ranked No. 1 for the first time since 2012, when it won the outdoor title
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – While some of Florida's distance corps opened the outdoor campaign last weekend, the majority of the Gators will begin their outdoor seasons Saturday (March 25) afternoon and evening at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational.
Some Gators will open in secondary events as part of training models, but several will compete in their primary events.
Nine-time All-American Shayla Sanders (100 meters) and three-time NCAA champion Kyra Jefferson (400 meters), neither of whom had indoor eligibility remaining this year, are two of the top Gators hitting the ground running outdoors. The duo is also set to run on UF's 4x100 relay team, which won the national title in 2015.
Indoor long jump national and SEC champion KeAndre Bates opens up in that very event this weekend. The El Paso, Texas native finished third at NCAA Outdoors in the long jump last year.
Reigning 400-meter hurdles national champion Eric Futch will open his outdoor campaign in the 400 meters, after he runs on UF's 4x100 relay with sophomore Michael Timpson Jr., 2016 NCAA Outdoors 100 meters qualifier Ryan Clark, and 2017 NCAA Indoor 60-meter hurdles champion Grant Holloway.
Other NCAA Outdoors qualifiers from 2016 competing in those events Saturday are Yanis David (long jump), Jontavia Dykes (discus throw), Asa Garcia (triple jump), and Darrielle McQueen (long jump).
