GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UF men's tennis team looks ahead to the postseason, as the Gators are set to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. Florida will face Florida Gulf Coast in its first round match Friday (May 11) at 5:00 PM.
Prior to Florida's match, Georgia Tech and Minnesota will face off in their first round match on the same day at 2:00 PM.
The team is looking to bounce back from its earlier-than-expected loss in the SEC Tournament semifinals, and build on its success in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, where the team advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005.
UF vs. FGCU
Although the two teams have never played a dual match against one another, the two are not unfamiliar. In the 2016 fall season alone, members of the two teams met five times:
- Maxx Lipman and Chase Perez-Blanco defeated Andres Alfonzo and Oliver Landert in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship in October.
- Lipman and Stephen Madonia defeated Alfonzo and Mateo Ruiz in the Dick Vitale Classic in November.
- Joseph Guillin defeated Ezequiel Cerrini in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship in October.
- Lipman defeated Alfonzo at the Dick Vitale Classic in November.
- Madonia defeated Ruiz at the Dick Vitale Classic in November.
The Eagles are coming off a ASUN Tournament championship, entering the tournament as a No. 4 seed and taking down North Florida and Lipscomb to win the title.
UF vs. Florida Schools
The Gators hold a 15-1 record in the tournament against other programs in Florida, going undefeated against Central Florida, Florida State, South Florida, Florida A&M and North Florida. The Gators' sole loss came from Miami in 2009.
Tournament Success
Last year, Florida hosted the first and second rounds and swept its two opponents – North Florida and South Florida – to advance to the round of 16. The Gators swept another opponent, SMU, to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005, where they fell to eventual champion Virginia.
