GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The first of many college baseball All-America honors were released on Thursday and Florida pitchers Michael Byrne and Alex Faedo are among the selections by Baseball America.
Byrne, who developed into the closer role for the Gators, was named to the Third Team while Friday night ace Faedo earned Second Team honors. Both players were named to the All-SEC Second Team in May. Michael Byrne set a school record with 16 saves this season.
Byrne broke the school record for saves in a single season, totaling 16 saves as Florida starts Super Regional action this weekend. He has a 1.55 earned run average and 74 strikeouts to just 12 walks.
Last weekend, Byrne pitched 10 scoreless innings in relief and earned a win and two saves in the 2017 NCAA Gainesville Regional. He combined with Faedo on Saturday night to strike out 18 USF batters, the most ever by UF pitchers in an NCAA Tournament game.
Faedo leads the weekend rotation with a 2.70 earned run average and has limited opponents to a .221 batting average. His career record of 26-6 is the best in school history for players with at least 20 decisions.
On the season, Faedo has 12 quality starts in 16 outings with 123 strikeouts, second-most in the SEC. He now has 315 strikeouts in his career, third-most in school history.
The Gators face Wake Forest this weekend in the 2017 NCAA Gainesville Super Regional. Game one is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
