COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Florida Gators women's cross country team are bringing the Arturo Barrios Invitational title back to Gainesville following five top-20 performances and six personal records on Saturday.
Junior Jessica Pascoe clocked a 20:04.3, which was an 18-second personal best. She adds a runner-up finish to her two individual titles from the previous meets.
Redshirt junior Elisabeth Bergh logged a 6th place finish, while senior Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell, redshirt senior Morgan Hull and freshman Imogen Barrett rounded out the top-five with personal records of their own. The Gators were five of the eight SEC runners in the top-20.
For the men, redshirt sophomore Colin Schaefer led the way for the Gators. He finished 22nd with a 25:03.6. He was the only Florida men's runner in the top-25. Thoughts on the Race from Assistant Coach Chris Solinsky:
- "The women did their job. Our message to them last night was to be patient. Patient, patient, patient and get ourselves into position and I thought they did a really good job of that. I know Jessica [Pascoe] really wanted to win it and break 20, but there are a few things we can modify and a few things we can work on in terms of strategy for her. Elisabeth [Bergh], Caitlin [McQuilkin-Bell], Morgan [Hull] and Imogen [Barrett] did a great job of working together and racing together the last K to push themselves where they wanted to be. And Gabrielle [Wilkinson] and Grace [Blair], last year would have been our top two runners and now they are six and seven, so that is just a testament to how far this team has come."
- "With the men, we are still a work in progress. Jack [Guyton] and Colin [Schaefer] did a great job of competing and did about what I thought they would do. Magnus [Pettersen] is sorting through a nagging calf, but still competed well. The person that has really stepped up is Justin Pacifico. Coming from being an 800 guy, he has really adapted to this training well and is being someone we can really rely on. We are a different team in two weeks once we get through the sickness and the nagging things and push through those things. So this was a good lesson heading into the SEC Championships."
