Thursday, October 25, 2018 | Cross Country
AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Florida cross country program begins postseason competition Friday (Oct. 26) morning at the SEC Championships, hosted by Auburn University.
In the SEC Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released in August, Florida's men were slotted to tie for sixth, and its women were picked to finish eighth.
Six SEC cross country teams are ranked among the nation's top-30 in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Cross Country National Coaches Poll. The Arkansas women are ranked fifth, while Georgia is No. 24 and Ole Miss is No. 26. The Arkansas and Ole Miss men are ranked Nos. 20 and 21, respectively, while Alabama is No. 30. The Florida women and Tennessee men are included among teams receiving votes.
Senior Morgan Hull is Florida's top returning finisher on the women's side from a year ago, as she crossed 58th overall. The Wellington, Fla. native has snagged top-15 finishes in both of her races this season.
Junior Jessica Pascoe has been the Gators' top runner all season, notching two individual titles and a runner-up finish. She ran a personal best 6k time at the Arturo Barrios Invitational two weeks ago and that time positions her third in the SEC. She has also earned two SEC Runner of the Week honors.
Redshirt Junior Elisabeth Bergh, a 2016 All-SEC First Team selection, recorded a 6th place finish in her last SEC Championship. After redshirting last season, Bergh has recorded three top-7 finishes and has come across no later than second for the Gators this season. Senior Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell posted a top-100 finish at last year's SEC Championships and has been one of the Gators top-4 this season, with three top-10 finishes.
Newcomers Imogen Barrett, Gabrielle Wilkinson and Grace Blair figure to make an immediate impact in their first SEC Championship. All three have compete for the fifth spot in the Gators lineup. Blair and Barrett have each snagged two top-20 finishes, while Wilkinson finished 60th in her first collegiate meet two weeks ago.
For the men, redshirt sophomore Colin Schaefer enters as Florida's top runner, having crossed first for the Gators in two of the three meets this season. He redshirted last season, but posted a 54th place finish at the 2016 SEC Championships.
Redshirt Juniors Jack Guyton and Magnus Pettersen also return after redshirting last year, but posted top-100 finishes at the 2016 SEC Championships. Guyton has been the Gators second runner in all three races this season.
Newcomers Nick Deal, Trevor Foley and Justin Pacifico will look to help the men's team in postseason action. Foley, a 5-time FL State Champion including the 2017 Cross Country gold medalist and a top-10 finish at the USATF Jr. XC Championships, has competed only once for the Gators this season and notched a collegiate best time and a 103rd place finish, fourth for the Gators at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. Pacifico was a late addition to the squad, but was one of the Gators top 800m runners during track season. The junior has solidified himself as a contributor to the men's top as the fifth or sixth runner.
A one-hour SEC Cross Country Championships highlight show will air Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
