Gators send six to Southeast Regional Tournament
2018 ITA SOUTHEAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE
ATLANTA – The University of Florida women's tennis team returns to the court this weekend, Oct. 19 - 22, to take part in the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament on the campus of Georgia Tech University.
All six Gator entries have earned a spot in the event's Main Draw.
The Gators begin play during Friday's Main Draw in the 32-team doubles round at 9 a.m.and then the action moves to the singles court where Tsveta Dimitrova and McCartney Kessler begin their journeys in the 64-player singles bracket at 10:30 a.m.
Florida's tournament roster includes sophomores Victoria Emma, Ida Jarlskog, Katie Kubicz and Kessler along with freshman Marlee Zein and the junior Dimitrova. Student-athletes from 14 schools across the Southeast are in search of the automatic bid to the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships that is awarded to both the singles and doubles champions.
The Gators have posted a 16-11 record on the singles court through two tournaments, with the sophomore trio of Jarlskog, Emma and Kessler having accounted for 12 victories. Florida's doubles mark sits at 8-5 with Jarlskog/Kessler leading the way at 4-2.
Emma, Jarlskog, Kessler and Dimitrova all participated in the nationally-competitive ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in Pacific Palisades, Calif., while Zein and Kubicz are primed for their first action since the Miami Invite which took place back in late September. At the ITA All-American Championships, the Gators were led by Jarlskog and Emma who each registered a pair of victories on the singles circuit.
Regionals bring a new look to the Gators' doubles unit as the lone returners from last season's team, Emma and Kessler, pair up and the two transfers, Jarlskog and Dimitrova join forces. The tandem of Kubicz and Zein round out UF's doubles pairings. As most coaches do during the fall campaign, Head Coach Roland Thornqvist is tinkering with different doubles combinations in preparation for the spring season.
The Gators feature four of the tournament's top 15 seeds in Kessler (No. 4), Jarlskog (No. 5), Dimitrova (No. 6) and Emma (No. 15).
