Jarlskog and the Gators battle but fall in the qualifying round Wednesday
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Florida women's tennis team's run at the 2018 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships came to an end Wednesday evening in the qualifying round, as the three remaining Gators fell in their matches at the national event hosted by Pepperdine University.
The Florida duo of Tsveta Dimitrova and Victoria Emma battled with the qualifying bracket's No. 1 seed in USC's Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes. Dimitrova/Emma faced an early deficit in the matchup but managed to scratch and claw to draw even at 6-6. The rally came up just short as USC's Kulikov/Valdes held on to make the pivotal plays down the stretch and secure an 8-7(6) victory. Dimitrova/Emma went toe-to-toe with the 27th-ranked duo in the latest ITA Preseason Rankings, Kulikov/Valdes, but walked away with a narrow defeat against the Trojan tandem.
After posting a pair of match victories in Tuesday's action, Ida Jarlskog carried her momentum into Wednesday's competition with a 6-3 victory in her first set against Georgia Tech's Kenya Jones. But Jones battled back to win the second set (7-5) which set up a winner-take-all third set with a trip to the main draw on the line. The sophomore Jarlskog fought but dropped the final set (6-3).
Jarlskog finished with a 2-1 record at the ITA All-American championships.
Emma's day did not end on the doubles court or in defeat, as the sophomore earned a victory (6-3, 6-3) over Emma Wilson (Arizona) in the back draw to end her West Coast travels in the win column.
The Dimitrova/Emma duo finished with a 1-1 mark on the tournament while Emma posted a 2-1 record in singles play and finished with two-straight wins in the back draw.
The Gators return to action Oct. 18-22 when they travel to the ITA Regional Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
