Gators Wrap Up First Day of Competition at Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic

Freshman Marlee Zein advances to quarterfinals
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic Friday, Nov. 2 at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Club. The Gators finished 3-3 on the singles circuit and 1-0 in doubles. Marlee Zein and Tsveta Dimitrova earned a spot in the doubles quarterfinals but their matchup was suspended due to inclement weather. Play will resume Saturday morning.
In the opening round of singles, Florida posted a 1-2 mark as Zein claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jeannez Daniel of Appalachian State while Kubicz and Dimitrova suffered setbacks in their respective matches. Dimitrova was defeated by Sofia Perez 6-3, 2-6 (10-8) of Florida Gulf Coast and Kubicz 6-4, 6-3 fell to TCU's Stevie Kennedy.
In the second installment of singles play, Zein battled in her round of 16 matchup but fell to Oklahoma State's Catherine Gulihur, 6-2, 6-1. Kubicz and Dimitrova both bounced back by earning wins in the consolation bracket. Dimitrova registered a convincing 8-1 win over Chloe Hule of Colorado and Kubicz posted an 8-4 victory over FGCU's Sarah Kelly.
The Gators began the day by notching a victory in the first round of doubles play as Zein/Dimitrova defeated Florida Gulf Coast's duo of Julia Ascua and Patricia Villar, 7-5. The duo began play in the quarterfinal round but play was suspended due to inclement weather.
Dimitrova and Kubicz remain alive in the singles consolation bracket and will advance onto Saturday's competition.
