The junior records four-straight match victories to end tournament
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Tsveta Dimitrova closed out the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic with four-consecutive victories and brought home the event's Consolation Singles Championship as the Gators finished up competition at the tournament Saturday afternoon held at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Club.
After falling in her opening match in the main draw Friday, Dimitrova rebounded by posting a victory in Friday's consolation first round, followed by three more wins on Saturday.
The Houston transfer began the second day of competition with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Virginia Tech's Shene Disbergen in the bracket's quarterfinal round. Next, she trailed early in the consolation semifinal, but battled back to earn a victory (2-6, 6-4, 10-3) over UCF's Natalia Serrano. In the championship match, Dimitrova drew Natasha Irani of Boston College, but the sophomore Irani defaulted the final and Dimitrova walked away the champion.
Dimitrova also competed in the doubles main draw with teammate Marlee Zein. After inclement weather caused their doubles quarterfinal matchup originally slated for Friday to be postponed, Dimitrova and Zein returned to the court Saturday to resume play. Zein/Dimitrova hung tough, but fell in a close one to Stevie Kennedy and Aleksa Cveticanin of TCU, 8-5.
Sophomore Katie Kubicz posted a 1-1 record on the day earning a victory in the consolation quarterfinals over UCF's Valentina Martin (6-0, 3-6, 10-7) but falling in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-4 to Irani.
The Gators return to action next week as the squad splits up for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships and the Florida State All Conference Showdown.
Quotes from the Court (Associate Head Coach Dave Balogh)
"Overall, we didn't play our best tennis this weekend, but we absolutely competed way better today. I'm looking forward to seeing us build on this next weekend for our last Fall event."
