WHAT HAPPENED:Â Florida beat UNF 8-3 on Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium to improve to 9-1 on the season.
UNF opened the scoring in the first, as center fielder Dan Murphy launched a solo home run to left center. Florida evened it in the second inning with a homer from
Jonathan India, his third of the season.
The Ospreys took the lead again in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a run after a throwing error by Florida, but the Gators responded in the bottom half of the inning as
Shane Shifflett tied the game with a RBI single to score India.
Florida brought the bomb squad in the fifth inning, as three players hit homers to score five runs in the inning.
JJ Schwarz and India hit back-to-back shots and freshman
Brady Smith hit the first home run of his career.
On the mound,
Tommy Mace was solid in his first career start going 3.2 innings with two runs (one earned) allowed on two hits.
Andrew Baker picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
Jonathan India – India went 3-for-4 on the night with two home runs and two RBI.Â
FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on starter Tommy Mace: "I thought he was good, really good. He threw a bunch of strikes. Obviously he gave up the first inning home run, but I thought he was good. We wanted to keep his pitch count between 45-50 pitches, we didn't know if he was gonna go three or four.
Andrew Baker came in and did a nice job behind him. For the most part, I thought the pitching staff was good, we only had one walk and one error on the night."
On the offense: "We gave some other guys some other opportunities to start tonight, Shane got a start in left and had a good night at the plate. Cal got the start behind the plate, he moved the runner one time with a runner at second and nobody out he moved him over.
Brady Smith hit his first home run and hit another ball hard to right center field and made a really nice play there in the ninth inning. India had a great night at the plate, a home run to right center, a ball hard in the three hole and the home run to left center. You know guys are going good when they're using the whole field like that. And JJ had a big night as well with the home run. All in all, we had a chance to get some other guys in there to pitch and to play and for the most part it was a clean game."
STANDOUT STAT:Â
3 – Florida hit three home runs in the fifth inning.
JJ Schwarz and
Jonathan India hit back-to-back shots and two batters later freshman
Brady Smith hit the first home run of his career. Schwarz and India are tied for the team lead with four homers apiece. The last time UF hit back-to-back home runs was May 14, 2017 at Alabama (Schwarz and
Nelson Maldonado).
