Gators Open Pepsi Florida Relays; Froeynes Shines at Texas Relays
Thursday, March 29, 2018 | Track and Field
Amanda Froeynes became the No. 3-ranked heptathlete in school history
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 74th Pepsi Florida Relays commenced Thursday, with much of the day's action featuring performances from Florida track and field alums and high school competition. Collegiate action comprises the majority of Friday's schedule, while Saturday will be the most fun-filled day of the meet, as every event on the track is a relay.
Florida's top performance Thursday actually came at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Freshman Amanda Froeynes took third in the heptathlon, posting the fifth-highest score in the nation and No. 3-ranked score on the Gators' All-Time Top 10. Fellow freshman Nikki Stephens took 14th, ranking her 18th nationally and sixth on the Gators' All-Time list.
The top 24 women in the heptathlon national descending order list following conference championship meets are the only ones to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. The heptathlon and decathlon are the only events not contested at the NCAA East and West Preliminary competitions.
Back at the Florida Relays, the Gators' lone collegiate competition was highlighted by outdoor personal records from Morgan Hull and Magnus Pettersen in the women's and men's 5,000 meters, respectively.
A 1-2 finish by Gator Great Robin Reynolds (2013-16) and collegiate record holder Kyra Jefferson (2013-17) in the women's 400 meters, as well as a 2-3 finish by 3-time world champion and 2-time Olympic gold medalist Christian Taylor (2009-11) and 2017 IAAF World Championships finalist TJ Holmes (2015-17) in the 400 meters highlighted the performances by Florida alums.
