WHAT HAPPENED: Florida beat Stony Brook 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium to sweep the weekend series against the Seawolves.
Starter Tyler Dyson improved to 2-1 on the year with a career-long outing, going 7.0 innings with one run allowed on five hits. He struck out seven batters with zero walks.
Stony Brook came out swinging against Dyson, notching a run on three singles in the top of the first.
The Gators evened things up in the fourth inning. JJ Schwarz led off with a walk and went to third on Keenan Bell's single to center field. Austin Langworthy tied the game with a single to left center.
Florida took the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs on an errant throw. With runners on first and second, Wil Dalton hit a ball sharply to the third baseman who stepped on the bag for one out but threw the ball past the first baseman and up the right field line.
Nick Horvath scored from first on the errant throw and Dalton came all the way around to score to make it 3-1.
Closer Michael Byrne worked two scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Brady Smith – Freshman
Brady Smith went 4-for-7 (.571) over the weekend with two walks and was hit by a pitch twice. He raised his batting average from .136 to .241 over the last three games.
FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan: "I thought Tyler was really good on the mound. Halfway through the game I was thinking it's really just his fifth career start, so every time he goes out there he's learning something new. He needed to pitch good today because their starter was really good as well -- a little unconventional, the first two hitters of the game we saw 3-2 breaking balls and he threw some right on right change-ups. He was wild just enough to keep our hitters a little uncomfortable in the box. He made some quality pitches when he needed to. Then their closer came in and did a really nice job, had a really tight slider. I knew today was going to be a little more difficult because I knew the guy on the mound was pretty good.
"I think the at bat that changed the whole game was JJ's at bat to lead off the fourth, it was a 12-pitch at bat. We scored only one run that inning but it drove up their pitcher's pitch count a little bit. JJ had another line drive to right center field. Brady Smith made a phenomenal play at third defensively to lead off the sixth inning and he had a couple of hits. Obviously the heads up, aggressive base running by Wil Dalton was big for us."
STANDOUT STAT: 13 – With a walk in the first inning, senior
JJ Schwarz has reached base safely in all 13 games this season.
UP NEXT: Florida will play a pair of midweek contests against UCF. On Tuesday, the Gators will travel to Orlando for a 6 p.m. start. The Knights will make the return trip on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Next weekend, Florida will host Rhode Island for a three-game series at McKethan Stadium.
