Three Gators enter the meet ranked in the world top 10
DES MOINES, Iowa – A total of 18 Gators, seven of whom either have collegiate eligibility remaining or just finished their senior seasons, will compete at this week's USATF Outdoor Championships.
The group features reigning American champion Eric Futch (400-meter hurdles) and 110-meter hurdles world leader Grant Holloway, who finished fourth at last year's USATF Outdoor Championships, missing a spot on the United States' IAAF World Championships team by five hundredths of a second. Holloway is coming off back-to-back NCAA titles in both the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles.
TJ Holmes (400 hurdles), who runs professionally for Nike, took bronze at last year's USATF Outdoors, eventually finishing fifth at the IAAF World Championships in London. Holmes, a St. Petersburg, Fla., native, ranks ninth in the world and third among Americans this year.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Championships gold medalist Christian Taylor is entered in both the triple jump (his primary event) and the 400 meters. With it being a non-championship year, Taylor has focused on the 400 meters. He set a personal record of 45.07 earlier this month and ranks 12th among Americans. Taylor also ranks second in the world in the triple jump.
Marquis Dendy is another American champion headed to Des Moines, Iowa. Dendy won the 2015 USATF Outdoors title and took silver last year.
Headliners among women's contingent are Kyra Jefferson, now representing Nike, and Cory McGee of New Balance. Jefferson broke the 28-year-old outdoor 200 meters collegiate record before finishing fifth at last year's USATF Outdoors. McGee was the 2013 USATF Outdoors bronze medalist in the 1,500 meters, and she is coming off three consecutive top-five finishes at USATF Indoor Championships at her primary distance.
NBC Sports Gold will have streaming coverage for all four days, though a paid subscription is required. NBC will have two hours of live television coverage Saturday and Sunday evening.
