Highlights
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 4 Florida Gators defeated Louisville, 3-1, on Saturday evening in their second match of the Bubly Invitational.
Florida took the first set 25-20, before falling 25-23 in the second game. The Gators would battle back though, winning the third and fourth sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-22, respectively.
This match was the first of four in which Florida has not faced a ranked opponent. That being said, as of the last AVCA poll, the Cardinals were receiving votes.
The player of the match for the Gators was senior
Taelor Kellum, who had the match of her career. She posted a personal-best 10 kills and seven blocks, as well as an .833 hit clip.
Thayer Hall (14) and
Holly Carlton (13) both posted double-digit kills for the Gators as well in the four-setter.
Louisville had three players in double-figure kills as well, but the 10 team blocks by Florida limited the Cardinals to a .203 hitting percentage.
In between the second and third sets, Florida honored a Gator Great in
Rhamat Alhassan for earning the Honda Award for the sport the volleyball. Alhassan was the first Gator to win the award for the sport of volleyball. The four-time All-American
signed with the NEC Rockets – a Japanese professional team – back in July.
How it Happened
During the first set, the teams went point-for-point until
Allie Monserez led the Gators on a 3-0 run to take the 12-9 lead. From that point on, the Gators never trailed. Louisville tied the set at 18-18, but once again a 3-0 run led by A. Monserez, paired with a 3-0 service run by
Thayer Hall secured the victory.
Florida found itself up 20-16 in the second set, thanks in part to six kills by
Holly Carlton in the frame. Louisville fought back to even it at 22-22 and then recorded three consecutive kills to take the set 25-23.
The Gators controlled the entire third set, taking as large of a lead as six at the 15-9 mark.
Haley Warner recorded a career-high four kills in the frame, followed by three kills by
Paige Hammons.
UF was down 13-9 in the fourth set and it looked as though the Cardinals might take set four, but
Macy Phillips and
Allie Monserez both strung together great service runs to bring Florida to within one at 14-13. The Gators took advantage of the seven Cardinal errors in the frame and won the set 25-22, claiming the match.
Florida is back in the Exactech Arena on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. when they face UCF. The match will be streamed on the SEC Network + with Tom Collett and Josh Crow on the call.

Thoughts from Coach Wise
- "The challenge of playing Louisville off of our loss last night was tough. I don't know who set that schedule [laughs], but that was a tall order for this team. At times, there were four or five newcomers on the court at once. We are learning on the fly and we are asking them to respond in a high energy environment and they did."
- "What I said to the team afterwards was that we learned a lot about ourselves last night [against USC], but we learned a whole lot about ourselves today as well in the win. This is one of those wins that are going to help us down the road."
