Carter's Corner: In Name of a Good Cause, Evans Takes Aim at Selfies Record

Lauren Evans is aiming the camera at herself (and a lot of partners) to raise awareness for Pediatric Cancer Month.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Lauren Evans continues her journey to get back into playing shape and her eventual return to the UF soccer team.

"I feel like in a month or two I'll be ready to play again,'' Evans said this week. "It's just going to mean so much to me."

Nicknamed "Lo," Evans shared her battle with acute myeloid leukemia last December with FloridaGators.com. In June, Evans was honored for the way she stared down cancer and inspired others.

Evans is ready for a walk on the lighter side on Sunday at Dizney Stadium. Following Florida's home match against LSU, Evans will attempt to set a Guinness World Record.

What is the record Evans is shooting for? Let's check the official rules ... the record is for "most self-portrait photographs taken in three minutes."

Selfies!

"I'm vey excited,'' Evans said.

At a recent team photo shoot, Evans spent much of her idle time by posting selfies with others on Snapchat. Soon, someone suggested an idea. Why not take aim at the Guinness World Record for most selfies in a three-minute span.

Never one to turn down a challenge -- or a chance at a selfie -- Evans was game.

The record is 168. Evans is aiming for 208.

More importantly, she wants to spread awareness this month for Pediatric Cancer Month, her perspective altered drastically over the past year by her own cancer battle.

"I was ready to do whatever. Especially if it involves selfies,'' she said. "Knowing I can't compete, this is huge for me. This is something all my team can be involved in."

Evans' cancer was declared in deep remission over the summer. She is slowly getting back to her old self. Along the way, she is trying to help others.

She recently became aware of former Western Kentucky All-American volleyball player Alyssa Cavanaugh's battle with leukemia. The two have shared stories about their experience this month. Cavanaugh has just started chemotherapy.

"She is telling me the symptoms she is going through," Evans said. "It's kind of bringing back memories for me. I think cancer didn't hit me until I see other people that have a lot to do with me, how it relates to me."

For Cavanaugh and many others, Evans serves as an inspiration. If you want to help her on Sunday, you can serve as a selfie partner at Dizney Stadium.
