Gators Open Season at Clemson, Virginia Tech
Thursday, January 17, 2019 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida track and field's 2019 season opener is here, and the Gators will compete at two different meets Friday and Saturday, with the throwers and horizontal jumpers heading to Virginia Tech, while high jumpers and runners compete at the Clemson Invitational.
Florida's men are ranked No. 2, while the Gators' women check in at No. 6 in the USTFCCCA National Track and Field Rating Index.
Four-time national champion and 60-meter hurdles collegiate record holder Grant Holloway opens his hurdling season Friday. The Chesapeake, Va., native will come back Saturday in the 200 meters, in addition to a leg on Florida's 4x400 relay with fellow returners Benjamin Lobo Vedel and Chantz Sawyers, who helped the Gators clock the third-fastest time in indoor track and field history last year.
The men's high jump will likely be the Clemson Invitational's premier event, with a Florida-Georgia showdown headlining the competition.
Junior Clayton Brown and redshirt senior Jhonny Victor, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at last year's SEC Indoor Championships, take on the conference's indoor silver and bronze medalists—Darius Carbin and Keenon Laine.
Also at the Clemson Invitational, reigning SEC Outdoors champion quarter-miler Sharrika Barnett opens her season in the 200 meters. Her fellow quarter-milers, including sophomore Taylor Manson, will also compete in the 200 and combine for a 4x400 relay Saturday afternoon.
At Virginia Tech, senior Yanis David, the nation's No. 1 returner in both horizontal jumps, will open her 2019 season in the long jump.
The weight throwing duo of sophomore Thomas Mardal and AJ McFarland, both of whom qualified for NCAA Indoor Championships last season, will open up as well.
