Jazmyn Foberg: Off-Season Surgery Forces New Role for 2019

Jazmyn Foberg's recovery from off-season elbow surgery is keeping her on the sideline for now. Foberg 's adapted to the role as vocal supporter and is always there with an encouraging word or hug.
In her first year as a Gator, sophomore Jazmyn Foberg took center stage.
She appeared in all but one meet last season, earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week twice and posted collegiate-best marks for vault (9.90) and uneven bars (9.95) as the youngest member of the Florida squad.
But now, due to an off-season elbow surgery, the Bayville, N.J., native will be stepping into a new role on the sideline, at least for the first part of the season.
Although it's not something she's used to, she still sees the positives of being a support system for her teammates.
"I feel like I'm getting to know different people more because I'm helping them around the gym, and watching and learning different things about each other," she said.
Despite not being able to participate with her team yet, Foberg has been at every practice and morning workout.
"It's really hard right now watching them train because obviously I want to be out there, but I'm playing a different role right now," she said.
However, coach Jenny Rowland says it's hopeful that Foberg will rejoin her teammates in the lineup at some point later in the season.
But, for now, she will be contributing to the Gators by being the best teammate she can and wait until her name is called.
"(She's) doing what she can and being prepared, so that when it is go time, when the doctor's release her, she's prepared and ready to contribute in any way she can," Rowland said.
Throughout her recovery and rehabbing, she has had help from her teammate and roommate Alyssa Baumann, who suffered a similar elbow injury prior to joining the Gators.
The support she has received and given to her team has made a difference to how successful they have been so far, according to her teammates.
"She's been able to step up and devote her energy in a different way," fellow sophomore Megan Skaggs said. "She's really been able to help not only the freshman, but us, by cheering us on and really being that solid person we need all around."
In her absence from the lineup, she's ready to watch the new freshmen make their mark as a part of this team.
"I've been watching them train and they are pretty good," she said. "They are pretty consistent, they have a high skill level and I'm excited to see them compete with us."
