Gators Outlast Rebels in Five-Setter

Florida remains atop the SEC with a 10-1 record

OXFORD, Miss. – The 12th-ranked volleyball team defeated the Ole Miss Rebels in five sets on Friday night in the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Ole Miss took the first set 25-23, but the Gators battled back to take the second set 25-15. The Rebels won the third set 25-21, but Florida forced a deciding fifth set after winning the fourth 25-14. Florida came out victorious with the 15-8 win in the final set.

Four Gators finished the night in double-digit kills: Thayer Hall (23), Rachael Kramer (18), Holly Carlton (12) and Paige Hammons (11).

Hall's 23 kills were just two shy of her career-best, while Kramer's 18 were a season-best.

Marlie Monserez led the team in assists, dishing out a career-high 63 in the five-setter.

Allie Gregory controlled the backcourt defense for the Gators, notching 22 digs in the match. Hall added 14 digs, while Monserez and Hammons both pitched in 11.

Florida recorded a season-high 17.0 blocks, led by seven from Carlton. Hall added five, while Kramer, Lauren Dooley and Darrielle King each pitched in four on the night.

The Gators are back in action on Sunday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. ET on the SEC Network +.

How it Happened
  • The two squads traded points in the early portion of the first frame, with neither team holding more than a two-point advantage. Florida went on a 5-1 run to take the 15-13 lead into the media timeout. The Rebels clawed their way out of the deficit to tie it up at 19-19 before Florida took the 23-22 lead. Ole Miss closed out the set on a 3-0 run to take the first frame.
  • Florida hopped out to the early 6-0 lead in the second set behind the serves of Marlie Monserez. Ole Miss pulled to within four at 7-3, but the Gators continued to keep the Rebels at a distance. UF got up 18-11 late in the second frame, forcing Ole Miss to use its second timeout. Florida closed out the set on a 7-4 run to tie the match at 1-1.
    • Florida hit .211 in the second hit, but held the Rebels to a -.059 clip. Hammons and Hall both recorded four kills in the frame, while Kramer and Carlton both pitched in three.
  • Ole Miss jumped out to the 10-5 lead in the third set, forcing Florida to take its first timeout of the frame. The Rebels continued to hold the momentum in the set, taking as large as an eight-point lead at 17-9. The Gators did not quit, battling back to within one at 17-16 behind two kills and two blocks by Darrielle King. Ole Miss answered with a 3-0 run to take the 22-17 late in the frame. The Gators pulled back to within three at 24-21, but Ole Miss secured set point to take the 2-1 match lead.
    • The Gators recorded just a .111 clip in the third frame. Kramer led the way with five kills, while Carlton added four in the frame.
  • It was all Florida early in the fourth set, with the Gators jumping out to the 8-2 lead, thanks in part to the serving of Monserez. The closest Ole Miss would get the rest of the way was four points at the 18-14 mark. From that point on, Florida went on a 7-0 run to close out the set and force a deciding fifth frame.
    • The Gators hit .212 in the fourth frame, holding Ole Miss to a -.152 clip. Kramer posted five kills in the frame, while Hall added four.
  • Ole Miss took the 3-1 lead early, but Florida came storming back on a 6-1 run to force the Rebels to use a timeout at the 7-4 mark. The Gators continued to hold at least a three-point lead and from the 11-8 mark, went on a 4-0 run to secure the victory.
    • The Gators hit .364 in the final frame, while holding Ole Miss to a .077 hitting percentage. Hall recorded five kills in the frame, while Kramer added two.
