No. 3 Florida 5, Jacksonville 4 (10 innings)
Â
WHAT HAPPENED:Â Florida's freshmen led the Gators to a 5-4 extra-inning win at Jacksonville on Tuesday night.
Â
Freshman
Jud Fabian's RBI double in the top of the 10th scored freshman
Cory Acton for the game-winning run. In addition, three freshmen pitchers combined for 7.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen, including
Nolan Crisp who pitched a scoreless 10th inning for his fifth save of the season.
Â
Florida jumped on top early, scoring a pair of runs in the first frame.
Brady McConnell led off with a walk and advanced to third on
Austin Langworthy's single to center.
Â
A sac fly from
Kendrick Calilao opened the scoring and a two-out double from
Jordan Butler, in his first at bat of the season, made it 2-0. A RBI single from McConnell in the second inning made it 3-0.
Â
Jacksonville responded with four unanswered runs. In the bottom of the second, a two-out double from Cory Heffron plated two runs to cut the lead to one. In the third inning, a two-out triple by Cory Garrastazu led to two unearned runs and a 4-3 lead for the Dolphins.
Â
Freshman
David Luethje was the first Gators' pitcher out of the bullpen and he settled things down on the mound, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings to keep the deficit at one.
Â
In the top of the seventh, the Gators' veterans rallied to tie the game. Langworthy singled to start things off then
Nelson Maldonado doubled to right center to bring in the tying run.
Â
Following Luethje's lead, fellow freshman
Christian Scott did his job out of the bullpen and shut down the Dolphins through the ninth, sending the Gators to extra innings for the first time this season.
Â
In the top of the 10th, a pair of freshmen combined to give Florida a 5-4 lead. Acton drew a one-out walk, reaching base for the fourth time on the night, and Fabian doubled to the wall in right center to bring in the game-winning run.
Â
Crisp took the mound in the 10th to pick up his fifth save of the year with a scoreless frame.
Â
In the top of the third inning, Florida right fielder
Wil Dalton and head coach
Kevin O'Sullivan were both thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Christopher Tipton.
Â
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
David Luethje – Once again, Luethje proved to be nearly unhittable. He tossed 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen on Tuesday night. On the season, he has yet to allow a run through 7.1 innings out of the bullpen with only three hits allowed.
Â
FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On tonight's game: "It really goes back to
David Luethje and
Christian Scott, two freshmen, threw six scoreless, and obviously Nolan did his thing at the end of the game. It was really the three freshmen pitchers and a bit hit by Fabian that kept us in the ballgame."
Â
UP NEXT:Â Florida returns to Gainesville to begin a 14-game homestand on Wednesday night against UCF at 6 p.m. at McKethan Stadium. The game will broadcast live on SEC Network+ and the Gator Sports Network.
