GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The fourth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (9-2) benefited from senior Justin O'Neal's 100th career singles win as it beat Wake Forest, 5-2, Tuesday evening at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators are now 5-0 at home this season and have won their last seven matches overall in Gainesville.
For the first time in their last four matches, the Gators claimed the doubles point with victories at the number one and number three spots. UF's number one team of juniors Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser posted an 8-5 victory over Johan Hansen and Brett Mauro to snap a two-match losing streak. Florida's freshmen duo of Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn then gave the Gators the opening point with an 8-5 win over Mike Berger and Justin Kaufmann at number three, upping their dual doubles record to 6-2.
Morrison, who is ranked seventh in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Rankings, gave Florida a quick start in singles, downing Hansen 6-2, 6-2 at number one to improve to 10-1 in dual play. O'Neal, who is ranked 16th, extended the Gator lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Berger at number two, becoming just the third player in school history to reach 100 career singles wins. O'Neal joins former Gators Mark Merklein (112 singles wins from 1991-94) and current UF assistant coach Damon Henkel (102 singles wins from 1992-96) in Florida's 100-win singles club. Behrmann then earned the first clinching win of his career, downing Mauro at number five 6-4, 6-2 to end a three-match losing streak. Sophomore Olivier Levant also won in singles, coming back for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mike Murray at number four.
Florida will next be in action this Tuesday, March 14 when it returns to SEC play at sixth-ranked LSU for a 2:00 p.m. CT (3:00 p.m. ET) match in Baton Rouge.
