Gator Invitational - Day 1
MEN'S TENNIS TAKES EIGHT OF 11 FROM MIAMI IN GATOR INVITATIONAL OPENER
Friday, October 27, 2000 | Men's Tennis
Led by Olivier Levant, the University of Florida men's tennis team won eight of its 11 matches against players from the University of Miami on Friday during the first day of the Gator Invitational at UF's Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
Throughout the weekend, UF, Miami, Auburn and South Florida will face off in a dual-match format however the event will only be individually scored. The tournament also uses experimental ITA rules which call for a tiebreaker when a doubles pro-set reaches 7-all or a singles set reaches 5-all.
In doubles, UF and Miami split the #3 and #4 matches. Matt Behrmann and Nathan Overholser played solidly for UF in their first match together this spring, posting an 8-5 win at #1. At #2 Levant and Jeremy Wurtzman led 5-0 but their Hurricane counterparts Michael Lang and Jose Lieberman fought back to tie the match at 6-6. The Gators were able to finish off the match victorious though, posting an 8-6 win to conclude doubles play.
Singles saw the Gators post wins at every position except #4 and #7. Levant led the charge with an exciting 6-4, 6-5 win at the top singles position. Behrmann, Ross Greenstein, Troy Hahn and West Nott were also singles winners for UF.
In the opening match of the day, South Florida won four of seven singles matches and two of three doubles contests against opponents from Auburn. The Tigers posted wins at #2, #5 and #6 singles and Mark Kovacs teamed with Raitis Tukans to post an 8-3 win at #1 doubles. Paco Antelo won at #1 singles for the Bulls, 6-5, 6-2 over Mark Kovacs. USF also won at #3, #4 and #7 singles and posted wins at #2 and #3 doubles.
