WHAT HAPPENED:Â No. 6 Vanderbilt clinched the series over Florida with a dominant 15-2 win on Friday night in Nashville.
Â
Through two innings, the game appeared to be a pitchers' duel but both starters lost their edge in the third. Vanderbilt's Patrick Raby walked four batters in the top half of the inning, but the Gators failed to push a run across.
Â
In the bottom of the third, the Commodores put together a one-out rally to notch six runs off UF starter
Jack Leftwich. Ty Duvall provided the biggest blow with a three-run double.
Â
After Raby's struggles in the third inning, he found his stride again and put up three more zeros before giving way to the bullpen.
Â
Leftwich continued to struggle and left the game after a two-run single from Ethan Paul made it 8-0 in the fourth inning.
Â
The Commodores remained aggressive and added three more runs in the sixth inning, three in the seventh and a final run in the eighth.
Â
Florida scored its only runs of the game in the seventh inning, both coming on bases-loaded walks.
Â
Entering the weekend, the Gators averaged 10.6 runs per game in their past 13 games. Through two games in Nashville, Florida has scored two runs on just eight hits.
Â
STANDOUT STAT: 6 – Vanderbilt scored six runs in the third inning. It was the first time this season that an opponent scored 5-plus runs in a frame against the Gators (215 innings).
Â
FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On tonight's game: "The bottom half of the [third] inning, Vanderbilt did a real nice job with two strikes and we just weren't able to put anybody away and make some pitches when we needed to. I think with Paul we were trying to go fastball in and missed that over the plate and he hit a line drive in the six hole to drive in a couple and get things going for them. Tip your cap to Vanderbilt, they swung the bats really good and obviously we did not play as well as we needed to.
Â
"Like last night, I think we were probably three quality at bats away from maybe stringing some things along or at least getting something going. Tonight we fell behind an awful lot there and it obviously was just not our night. It's obvious to me that a lot of our young players, the SEC play is a little bit quick for them right now, it's a little bit fast for them. The only thing we can do is continue to work hard and play a little better tomorrow and come out of here with a win and go back home and regroup."
