Stanko’s PR Opens Pepsi Florida Relays

The Gators, and the three-day Pepsi Florida Relays truly get going Friday afternoon, but Jacob Stanko provided a bright spot Thursday.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida junior Jacob Stanko threw close to a two-meter personal record in the javelin to headline a light opening day of competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays. The Gators, as well as the three-day event itself, truly get into gear Friday afternoon.

Stanko eclipsed his personal best for the second consecutive week, hurling the javelin 62.25 meters. That mark was 1.88 meters farther than his 60.37-meter throw at FSU Relays last Friday – which was a PR of 2.61 meters).

Looking to the rest of the weekend, Florida's men have won two of the last three NCAA Outdoor Championships and repeated as indoor NCAA champions three weeks ago, marking the program's ninth national title since 2010. The Gators' women are coming off a sixth-place finish at NCAA Indoors, and they finished fifth at each of the last two NCAA Outdoors. The men and women enter the week ranked fourth and 10th, respectively, in the preseason national rankings.

An additional eight men's teams and eight women's teams traveled to Gainesville ranked in the preseason top 25.

Friday and Saturday will serve as the outdoor opener in primary events for numerous Gators, including defending national champion Grant Holloway (110-meter hurdles) and reigning indoor national champion Yanis David (triple jump). Florida's nation-leading men's 4x100 relay team is expected to take the track again as well.
