Tuesday, April 16, 2019 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida women's golf team begins post-season play tomorrow in Birmingham, Alabama for the SEC Championships.
Florida fell to Arkansas 2-3 in the match play quarterfinals of the 2018 SEC Championships. Arkansas was then ranked the No. 2 team in the country and went on to win the 2018 SEC title.
The Gators are currently the No. 4 team in the conference, behind Vanderbilt (1), Arkansas (2), and Tennessee (3). They last won the SEC title in 2017, with one current Gator from that squad, junior Marta Perez. The team returns four players from last year's conference squad, Perez, junior Sierra Brooks, and sophomores Elin Esborn and Addie Baggarly. The fifth player in the lineup this year will be freshman Clara Manzalini.
Florida finished their 2018-19 season ranked No. 9 in the country and with two team titles, two individual titles, and seven top-five finishes. Most recently, they finished sixth at the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic last week hosted by SEC opponent Georgia.
Course Information: The 2019 SEC Championships will take place at the Legacy Course of Greystone Golf and Country Club, a private, 36-hole golf club located just outside Birmingham, Alabama, in the suburb of Hoover, Alabama. The Legacy course is par 72 and 6,253 yards.
Format: The Championships will be played over the course of five days. The first three days, Wednesday-Friday, will be three rounds of stroke play where the top eight teams at the conclusion will advance to match play on Saturday and Sunday. All eight teams will play the quarterfinals matches on Saturday and the four winning teams will advance to the semifinals and championship matches on Sunday.
Coach's Take
"I think this is the first year I can remember where there isn't a clear favorite in the league, but there are a number of really solid teams so it will be a fight to the finish. We feel we have as good a chance as anyone if we keep good attitudes and play smart golf. We are all really excited to be here and compete this week. We are always grateful for the opportunity to play for an SEC Championship." – Head Coach Emily Bastel Glaser
