INDIANAPOLIS – Florida assistant coach Nic Petersen will serve on the United States coaching staff for the upcoming 2019 IAAF World Championships, as announced by USA Track and Field Thursday evening. Petersen will be the staff's assistant coach for men's jumps and combined events in Doha, Qatar.
"I'm humbled and honored to accept this amazing opportunity to serve as an assistant coach," Petersen said. "It's always incredible to be part of Team USA. I'm excited to head to the World Championships and work with the greatest track and field team in the world.
"Being a member of Team USA is the dream for every coach and athlete, and I look forward to working with the best in the world."
Petersen is in his seventh season as Florida's assistant coach, and he has worked with the jumpers his entire tenure.
Since joining UF's staff prior to the 2013 season, Gators jumpers have won 13 national titles, garnered 60 All-America honors, and broken six school records.
Most recently, Petersen helped senior Yanis David win the NCAA Indoors title in the triple jump. David also became the fourth woman in history to sweep the long jump and triple jump titles at the SEC Indoor Championships, which led to both SEC Indoor Field Athlete and USTFCCCA National Indoor Field Athlete of the Year accolades.
Petersen had a hand in junior Grant Holloway's historic indoor season as well, helping the Chesapeake, Va., native to a bronze medal in the long jump at NCAA Indoor Championships – where Holloway scored 26.5 individual points and was half a point shy of the meet record. Holloway was the long jump silver medalist at SEC Indoor Championships, where his 28 individual points set a meet record.
Also at March's NCAA Indoors, junior Clayton Brown finished fifth in the triple jump, scoring four points as Florida captured its Division I-leading ninth team national title since 2010. Petersen has been on staff for five of those team titles (three outdoors, two indoors).
Petersen continues to work with 2015 The Bowerman winner Marquis Dendy, who won seven national titles and became the second man in Division I history to sweep the long jump and triple jump titles at three consecutive NCAA Championships. Since exhausting his eligibility and signing professionally with Nike in 2015, Dendy has qualified for the 2015 and 2017 IAAF World Championships, in addition to winning the long jump gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Dendy also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in 2016, but an injury he sustained during Olympic Trials left him unable to compete in Rio.
