WHAT HAPPENED:Â Florida used a complete team effort to beat Florida A&M 12-1 on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium.
Â
The Gators took advantage of some defensive miscues to take a lead in the third inning.
Jacob Young led off with a double,
Nelson Maldonado singled and both came home after a pair of FAMU errors to make it 2-0.
Â
Florida blew it open in the fourth with six runs on six hits. Maldonado and
Kendrick Calilao capped it off with back-to-back homers to make it 8-0. It was the first time this year the Gators hit back-to-back home runs.
Â
Four more runs in the seventh inning completed the scoring for Florida.
Jonah Girand had a two-run single,
Jordan Butler drew a bases-loaded walk and
Kendrick Calilao notched his third RBI of the night with a sac fly to center.
Â
FAMU's lone run came on a solo home run in the seventh from Tucker Rayburn.
Â
On the mound for Florida,
Nolan Crisp got the start and improved to 3-0 with three shutout innings.
David Luethje also pitched three scoreless frames while
Nick Blasucci,
Nick Pogue and
Hunter McMullen each pitched an inning in relief.
Â
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Austin Langworthy – The junior went 3-for-5 on Tuesday night and has a five-game hitting streak. Over that span, he leads the team with a .450 average (9-for-20) and has three doubles, a home run and four RBI.
Â
STANDOUT STAT: 5 – Florida's five-game win streak is its longest of the season.
Â
FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On tonight's game: "Just wanted to get [Nolan] three innings there, keep his pitch count under 45 to have him available for Friday night. I thought all the pitchers did a really nice job. Luethje was really efficient with only 32 pitches over three. Then the other guys come in and throw one apiece. It was really good to see Nick [Blasucci] get out there, it looked like he's getting his fastball back, it was up to 93-94. That was probably the best inning that
Nick Pogue has thrown all year long, and Hunter [McMullen] hasn't thrown in a while so it was good to get him back out there.
Â
"I think the other important thing is Langworthy got three hits tonight; he seems to be swinging the bat a lot better. Nelly, our team captain, had a good night with three hits. We only made the one error there at short. We had a chance to play a lot of different players and get some young pitchers work on the mound. It was good in a lot of ways tonight."
Â
On the midweek mindset: "We talked about this before the game. We lost to FAMU back in 2016, I went back and looked at the box score of that game and we had five big leaguers in that game. Richie Martin, Harrison Bader, Pete Alonso and the guys who pitched, Bobby Poyner and Justin Shafer both pitched. So anything can happen. You look at Ole Miss today. They come off a tremendous weekend beating Arkansas at their place, which is a really difficult task, and they end up losing a game to North Alabama today. Anything can happen. You've got to be able to play. We certainly have lost those games in the past. We won a national championship in 2017 after being taken to Game 7 in the Regional against Bethune-Cookman. Anything can happen, so that was the message today and I'm glad they responded the way they did because certainly we needed to have the right mindset going into tonight."
Â
UP NEXT:Â This weekend, the Gators will travel to Oxford, Miss., for a three-game series at Ole Miss. Friday's opener is at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on SEC Network+ and the Gators Sports Network.
