GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida's men dominated the field events much of the afternoon, and it set the table
Jessica Pascoe's impressive run in the 5,000 meters to close the opening day of the Tom Jones Memorial, which the Gators host Saturday afternoon as well.
The day began with the men's hammer duo of sophomore
Thomas Mardal and redshirt senior
AJ McFarland posted the No. 5- and No. 11-ranked marks in the country, respectively. The pair combined for a 1-2 finish with huge season-bests of 72.13 meters (236 feet, 7 inches) and 70.02 meters (229 feet, 8 inches).
Redshirt senior high jumper
Jhonny Victor snagged sole possession of the nation's No. 7 ranking, breaking a five-way tie with an outdoor personal record of 2.23 meters (7 feet, 3.75 inches). Victory's clearance also tied him for sixth on Florida's All-Time Top 10 list.
Back in the throws, junior javelin thrower
Jacob Stanko set a massive personal record to crack Florida's All-Time Top 10 and punch his ticket for the NCAA East Preliminary. Stanko's top throw entering Friday was 62.25 meters (204 feet, 3 inches), but he uncorked a 65.90-meter throw, topping that mark by 12 feet. The Manchester, N.H., native is now ranked in the top 25 within the East Region, and he only needs to be 48th or higher to compete for a spot at nationals next month.
Over in the shot put ring, redshirt sophomore
Connor Bandel re-entered the national top 25 with a season-best throw of 19.14 meters (62 feet, 9.5 inches) – which came on his sixth and final attempt of the day. Bandel ranks 23rd nationally.
Sophomore
Cory Poole secured a regional berth in the 400-meter hurdles last week, but he lowered the nation's 15th-ranked time to 50.67 seconds Friday night.
And Pascoe closed it all out with what will likely be an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier in the 5,000 meters. Her time of 16:17.12 also moved her onto Florida's All-Time Top 10. The last time into the regional in 2018 was 16:26.06.
In addition to Saturday's collegiate action, two-time Olympic gold medalist triple jumper
Christian Taylor, Olympic gold medalist quarter-miler
Tony McQuay will compete in their signature events.
