Sophomore McCartney Kessler drops decision to UCLA’s Elysia Bolton in NCAA Tournament First Round
LAKE NONA, Fla. – University of Florida women's tennis sophomore McCartney Kessler, making her first career appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the season-ending event's first round Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla.
Kessler saw the Pac-12's Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, Elysia Bolton, jump out to an early lead and never look back as the Gator sophomore exited in the 64-player tournament's first round.
The two-time All-SEC selection finishes her dual season with a 13-9 record.
Entering the contest riding a four-match win streak, Kessler had built some considerable momentum down the stretch run of the dual match campaign but couldn't harness that same energy after a 16-day layoff.
After splitting the first two games of the opening set, Bolton recorded wins in five-straight to pick up a 6-1 win. She then won the first four games of the second set, before Kessler made a late run to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Gator sophomore was unable to hold serve in the decisive game as Bolton notched her team-best 17th victory of the season.
Bolton and the rest of her UCLA teammates competed in the NCAA Team Championships this past week in Lake Nona, where they fell to North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
Kessler, UF's lone representative in the 2019 singles field, became the program's 114th player to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships and the Gators fall to 76-51 overall in first round action.
Kessler's NCAA journey remains alive as she will return to the court tomorrow to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships with teammate Victoria Emma. No. 25 Kessler/Emma will battle No. 4 Andrews/Broomfield of UCLA in the first round from Lake Nona. A match time has not yet been established.

Quotes from the Court
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
"Hats off to Bolton, she came out locked in and played a really strong match today. She played aggressively from the first serve and we just weren't able to match it. That being said, I'm really proud of the way McCartney competed all season long for us. She endured some injuries and kept battling through it. There's no doubt in mind that the experience gained all season, and in particular in today's NCAA action, will help her immensely as she continues to grow in her college career."
