Gators Open NCAA East Preliminary with Five Austin Berths
Thursday, May 23, 2019 | Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida punched five NCAA Outdoor Championships tickets and advanced 11 of its 16 runners to finals on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary.
Florida's hammer throw trio is headed to NCAA Outdoors for a second consecutive year, as sophomore Thomas Mardal, redshirt senior AJ McFarland, and senior Anders Eriksson were all well inside the top 12. Last year, in Eugene, Ore., Eriksson took national runner-up honors, while Mardal and McFarland finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Junior Grant Holloway flirted with the 12-man cut line in the men's long jump, but he finished seventh after his third and final attempt of the afternoon reached 7.68 meters (25 feet, 2.5 inches). Senior Yanis David, a four-time SEC champion, was also near the cut line in the women's long jump, yet managed to survive by three centimeters.
Five of the 11 Gators who advanced on the track did so by winning their respective heats. That group was comprised of senior Sharrika Barnett (women's 400 meters), junior Raymond Ekevwo (men's 100 meters), sophomore Hakim Sani Brown (men's 100 meters), sophomore Chantz Sawyers (men's 400 meters), and junior Denzel Villaman (men's 400-meter hurdles). Villaman also set a personal record by almost a quarter of a second.
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations within the East and West Regions earned berths to their respective preliminary meet. Only 12 individuals and 12 relays from each regional competition advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, slated for June 5-8.
