David Completes SEC Awards Sweep
Tuesday, May 28, 2019 | Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida horizontal jumper Yanis David was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. David was also this year's SEC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, making her the Gators student-athlete in history to sweep the indoor and outdoor awards.
At the SEC Outdoor Championships earlier this month, the Lamentin, Guadeloupe native won both the long jump and triple jump titles.
Paired with her sweep of those title at February's SEC Indoor Championships, David joined Gator Great and Olympian Shara Proctor (2010) as the only other woman in conference history to win all four horizontal jumps titles – indoor and outdoor long jump and triple jump – in the same year.
The senior won the triple jump crown with the third-farthest jump in collegiate history (14.35 meters / 47 feet, 1 inch). David has four wind-legal jumps of 14 meters this outdoor season, while no other collegian has a wind-legal mark better than 13.77 meters.
She also posted the nation's No. 2-ranked long jump mark (6.65 meters / 21 feet, 10 inches) to win that title by 12 centimeters.
The Gators also saw junior hurdler Denzel Villaman and senior triple jumper Asa Garcia named to the SEC Community Service Team. Villaman performed 32.5 hours of community service this year, spending most of his time as a mentor at JJ Finley Elementary. Garcia completed 43 hours of community service, and the majority of her time was spent as a mentor at Gainesville High School. This is the second year in a row Garcia represented women's track and field on the SEC Community Service Team.
Florida also amassed plenty of All-SEC awards. First-team recognition goes to individual event champions, while second-team honors are bestowed to silver and bronze medalists. The highest freshman finisher in each individual event garner an All-Freshman Team accolade.
